Confucius say ... の謎（３） なぜ三単現の s がつかない？（つづき）
前回の続きです。
前回は「Confucius say」という文法的に破綻している言い方がアメリカで広がった背景には，新聞，ラジオ，そしてレコードがあったことがわかりました。
As far as I know (and please correct me if I’m wrong), this was the first time Confucius was introduced into mass American culture. This first impression seems to have stuck with us, so that “Confucius say,” despite not only its inaccuracy but also its extreme offensiveness, is ubiquitous even today.
I hear it from students, in email forwards from colleagues, and even occasionally in news commentary. (Anyone can get a sense of its pervasiveness by doing a Google image search.) I can’t help but think that this popular caricature may be in some measure responsible for the prejudice in American academic philosophy against Chinese thought– but that is the subject of another post.
私が知っている限り（間違っていたら正してくださいね），これがアメリカの大衆文化に孔子が紹介された最初です。この第一印象から私たちは抜け出せなくなったようで，「Confucius say」という言い方は文法的に間違っているだけでなく，かなり不快なのにもかかわらず，今日でもいたるところで見られます。
私は生徒から，同僚からのメールで，時にはニュースのコメントで見聞きします。（グーグルの画像検索があればすぐに拡散しますね。）この大衆的な風刺画は中国の思想に対するアメリカ人の学術的な考え方の偏見に一定の責任があるだろうと考えざるを得ません。でも，それは私の力の及ばないところです。

How do you respond to it when you hear it? What do you think is the best way to counter this impression of Confucius in the your students’ imaginations?

結局は，1930年代あたりに中国からきた移民の奇妙な英語をふざけて風刺した英語から来ているようです。
前回のガイ・ロンバルドの曲の歌詞も実は破綻しています。

三単現の「s」はすべて無視，文法は破綻しています。
このようないわゆる「ピジン英語」はスター・ウォーズのヨーダが話す英語にも使われています。

まあ，アジア人のわれらにとってはあまり面白いことではありませんが，アジア色を出したいときにアメリカ人が使うのがこのような手法です。
最後に，これなんかは明らかに孔子の言葉ではないことがわかります。

（オークランドに家を買えば，残りの人生，１日も働かなくてよし。）
そんなことを孔子が言うはずありませんよね（笑）。

「Confucius say」を頭に付ければ何でも格言になってしまうのですね。フォーチュンクッキーのおみくじみたいです（笑）。
ちょっと怖くなったのですが、、、日本人移民に対してもこうした偏見と言うか、誤解のようなもの有るのでしょうね。
でも、まだ分からない。なぜ「ｓ」が消えたのだろう？「Simon says」は三単現の「ｓ」が付いていますよね。

要は、まだ十分に英語を話せない中国人移民の”モノマネ”って事なのでしょうか？
だとすると、無意識であっても悪意を感じますね。

なぜ三単現のｓがついてないかは，書いてなかったですね。おっしゃるとおり，ちょっと悪意があると思います。当時の中国からの移民が使っていた三単現のｓが抜けた英語（ピジン英語）を孔子の言葉として茶化したのでしょう。
次回，その元になったっと思われるあるキャラクターについて書きました。この影響が大きかったのではないでしょうか。
