Looking back on 2022 Why do I climb mountains?
毎年のように大晦日は英文で1年を振り返ってきたので,今年も少しだけ書いてみます。
This year I happened to know a person, Tanaka Yoki on TV.
He calls himself a "Professional Adventure Racer".

In 2014, he climbed all 100 famous mountains in Japan in 208 days and 11 hours.
He started his journey from Yakushima Island and used a kayak to Kyushu!
So he never used any transportation such as cars, trains, or ships to the goal Rishiri Island in Hokkaido.
He walked and walked, and used a kayak to cross the sea!
So it's natual for me to start climbing mountains!?
In August I climbed Mt. Ryozen in Date City, Fukushima.

This is Azuma Kofuji that I climbed in October.
The name means "Small Mt. Fuji in Azuma".

Before climbing it, I had a hard time to climb Mt. Issaikyozan and reached the top.

And how beautiful the lake was!
You can't see it without climbing the mountain.

This is the picture I took when I climbed Mt. Tateishi in Higashine City, Yamagata.

In the same month, I climed Mt. Ichinembo in Yonezawa City, Yamagata.
It has a lot of beautiful and strange shapes of rocks.

You can see two people on the rock.
I was there 10 minutes before.

November...
Mt. Hanazuka is known as the northest mountain that you can see Mt. Fuji.
It's in Kawamata Town, Fukushima.

I could NOT see Mt. Fuji. (:-<)
But the place I wanted to see the most was these rocks.
We call them "Tateiwa"

On my way home I dropped in Iinomachi, Fukushima City.
Look at the big rock of Mt. Akaishi there.

This is a picture of "Three Rocks" of Tendo City in Yamagata.

This is Nakanomori in Sendai.

There are seven small shrines on the top. How sacred!

I tried to climb Mt. Obokombe in Kawasaki Town in Miyagi.

There is a strange rock, "Mammoth Rock"!

On the way back home I visited Banjiiwa.
I didn't climb it, of course.

Risshakuji Temple is called Yamadera. It meas a temple of a mountain.
A well-known haiku poet Matsuo Basho visited and made a famous haiku.

Mt. Iwakado in Miyamoto City, Fukushima is a small mountain, but it has a lot of strange or queer rocks!

It's not hard to walk around. I recommend to visit it.
In December, I visited Meotoiwa in Marumori Town, Miyagi.
It's the last mountain I climed this year.

The mountain is in Hippo area in Marumori.
Hippo sounds like a big animal, hippopotamus, doesn't it?
Why do I climb mountains?
George Mallory was asked, "Why did you want to climb Mount Everest?"
He answered, "Because it's there."

Again, why do I climb mountains?
To know a new thing is a pleasure.
And the more someone knows, the more he or she wants to experience.
So now I am a kind of "mountainaholic" just like workaholic or alchoholic.
And in the end, I heard a sad news.
Pele, a football player died on December 29th.
He visited my school in October after the big earthquake, 2011.
(I was not working there at that time.)

We thank you, Pele.
I pray for his soul.
