前回の続き。
映画「ノッティングヒルの恋人」に出てきたメッセージ付きのベンチは今なぜかオーストラリアのパース市の公園にあるという。

A 20-year myth was debunked yesterday when it was revealed the so-called Notting Hill bench in Queens Gardens is a fake.
昨日，20年にわたる作り話がウソであったと証明された。クイーンズ・ガーデンズのいわゆる「ノッティングヒルのベンチ」がニセモノであると暴露されたのだ。
The bench bears a City of Perth plaque stating “this seat features in the 1999 film Notting Hill starring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant” and that it was “kindly donated ... by a local resident who wishes to remain anonymous”.
そのベンチにはパース市がつけた銘板がついていて，こう書いてある。「このベンチはジュリア・ロバーツとヒュー・グラント主演の1999年の映画『ノッティングヒルの恋人』に出てきます。匿名を希望する地域住人のご厚意でパース市に寄贈されました」
People have wondered about the identity of the donor for years, including most recently on 96FM’s Paul & Lise breakfast show, but the only clue has been an inscription that read “Rodd & Nicole 2002”.
人々は何年もの間，その寄贈者が誰なのかと推測してきました。最近では朝のラジオ番組でも取り上げられました。しかし，唯一の手掛かりは「ロッドとニコル 2002」と読めるある碑文だけなのです。

The prevailing narrative was the bench had been purchased from a film studio by Rodd with two Ds as a gift for his sweetheart but, when that relationship ended, he gifted it to the City of Perth so other romantics could enjoy it.
一般的に言われていることは，そのベンチは d が２つついたロッド（Rodd）が恋人のために映画スタジオから購入したものということ。でも，その関係は終わっていたために彼はパース市に寄贈し，恋人たちがベンチを享受できているのだ。
That story was thrown out on Monday when it was confirmed the bench didn’t come from a movie studio but rather a furniture factory in O’Connor.
この話は月曜日に否定された。というのは，このベンチは映画スタジオから来たのではなく，パース市郊外のオコナ―にある家具工場から来たことが裏づけられたのだ。
It prompted us to take a closer look at the bench, which revealed there are obvious differences between the one in Perth and the seat from the film.
ベンチをより詳しく見てみよう。パースのベンチと映画のものでは明らかな違いがあることがわかる。
The revelation broke hearts all over town, including that of WA Liberal MP Zak Kirkup, who had, himself, fallen for the con when he took his partner, Michelle, to see the bench “in a bid to impress her with my exceptional knowledge of Perth history”.
この新事実は街中の人々を落胆させた。西オーストラリア自由党の議員ザック・カーカップも騙された一人だ。彼はパートナーのミシェルに「パース市の歴史の類まれな知識を見せつけて感動させようとして」ベンチまで連れてきたのだ。
“I applaud the Woodward and Bernstein-style journalism that revealed the bench to be as fake as a Labor Party election promise, but it’s a bit like finding out that Santa’s not the real deal,” Mr Kirkup said.
「僕は（あのウォーターゲート事件に迫った）ウッドワードとバーンスタインのようなジャーナリズムを称賛するよ。労働党の選挙公約と同じようにあのベンチがニセモノだって暴露したからね。でも，まあサンタが実在しないって明かすようなものか」とカーカップ氏は言った。
Paul Hogan from 96FM said the saga made him “trust nothing in Perth anymore”.
“I took my kid to the zoo on the weekend and I swear I saw a zipper on the rhinoceros,” Hogan said.
ラジオ局のポール・ホーガンはこの話によって「パース市のことは何一つ信用しない」と言っている。
「週末に子どもを動物園に連れて行ったけど，間違いなくサイの背中にチャックがあったよ」とホーガンは言う。
City of Perth chair commissioner Eric Lumsden said the council had accepted the bench “in good faith” and, at the time, had “no reason to question its originality”.

“My name is Rodd, Rodd with two Ds,” the anonymous bench donor said down a phone line from the US.
